The Sevens Update
by ILS on Sep.09, 2011, under Blog
so it’s been almost 3 months since I’ve made an update here. The summer has come and gone. We had great weather here in Montreal.
I’ve managed to enjoy it as much as I can. Biking, jogging, walking. Enjoying the BBq, and hanging out on the back porch, family, friends, beers, etc. Some serious landscaping, and of course some busy times in the studio.
WLove album is all but finished, meeting up one last time for mix touch ups.
The Sevens The Alain Caron Sessions album I started at the beginning of June has com along nicely. I managed to write 5 or 6 original pieces of music and incorporated his material in it. A hybrid of his work and my work. And I managed to remix 3 or 4 tracks of his. Overall I’m really happy how it’s turned out. Considering the handful of nights I had to squeeze in here and there, along with all my other obligations, to get it done.
There are some cool tracks on this record. With the limited setup I have going at the moment (Cubase, Reason & some vst plugins). It’s forced me to step out of my routine, keep things simple. I didn’t layer things to much, kept the arrangements sparse, let the music breathe. My main objective, was to keep things vibey, and chill. I think I’ve achieved what I set out to do.
Have a week left to add some vocals and then mixing and deliver it.
good times…
The Sevens Day 2 (Work flow)
by ILS on Jun.15, 2011, under The Sevens
There is something to be said for work flow. Last night was both good fun and frustrating at the same time. It’s been a while since I’ve sat down just to write some music. Easily over a year at this point. That’s enough time to develop some serious rust issues, and to top it off I’ve upgraded my main writing/producing computer. Haven’t had enough down time between projects to get all my software & libraries installed and organized etc. So it’s a little challenging at the moment to get my writing groove and work flow happening again. It’s a challenge & I like challenges. I’ve been wanting to change up the way I work when I write for a while now, just to spice things up a little bit. A new method of writing as well as a different perspective i figure will give me some new fresh ideas. Remains to be seen I guess… I even have some new ideas for the next Inner Light Spectrum album on the old pc that uses specific software, plug ins, and settings. Oh well tis the era in which we live in. I have to admit I love the flexibility of the new ways of working with the pc, ex automation, editing, processing, and probably best of all total recall of your songs and sessions etc.
Last night a few attempts were made at writing with some of Alain Caron’s materials. Becoming more familiar with the material I have at hand. Seriously it’s a gold mine of insane jazz players and performances. Sax, trumpet, piano, keyboard and last but not least bass solo’s. The challenge right now is to incorporate all that into some cool grooves and tunes, and still like them. My biggest problem right now is myself and my mind getting in the way. An hour into an idea that seemed so cool, leaves me feeling confused and annoyed. I need to simplify things as much as possible. Sometimes you have to go really far to realize where you needed to be all along.

The Sevens
by ILS on Jun.14, 2011, under Blog
A good friend of mine has asked me to compose a collection of acid jazz/groove/electronica songs mixed in (at least that’s how I interpret it) mixed with some Alain Caron. For a project he calls The Sevens. Due in stores fall 2011.
Besides being anxious to write some new material, the cool thing is I’ll have access to Alain Caron’s music, with some of the finest jazz musicians around. What a treat!
Spent the week end transferring tapes and files from a hard drive. I dove in head 1st last night. Spent the night listening to the tracks, trying different things out, seeing how far i can go, trying to squeeze some direction out of it all. So far it all looks & sounds promising. It’s going to be a groovy & smooth summer. stayed tuned…
Tired
by ILS on May.26, 2011, under Blog
Really tired these days. Been working hard every night in the studio trying to finish up a few projects. Lot’s of fun and good times there.
The last few months with the help of friends and family, I’ve changed my eating habits from horrible to tolerable, and have started working out again, trying to get back into shape. Set myself a mental goal, (well actually it sort of formulated itself in my consciousnesses) to get myself in shape this summer and go back to studying Martial Arts with a friend like I did 15 years ago! Jeez!! has it been that Long? Anyhow just staying motivated.
On a musical note, quite a few interesting projects on the horizon for this year and next year. I’ll keep you posted here.

Inner Light Spectrum – Afternoon in the Park (Orbiting Dream) Ft Dan Prudian by Inner Light Spectrum
Sunday Morning Goodness

Just a short little post for today. So not only do I have an awesome family, great friends, and am healthy (well mostly… working on getting healthier). I have amazing listeners (feels weird to say fans). It’s great waking up checking your email and receiving comments like this on from tgd521 on you tube. It’s a comment on my Dukkha track of the Path to Reality album (available on itunes… shameless plug).
Here is the comment “I don’t understand how you aren’t known around the world. Your music amazes me even now, and i discovered you a good 2-3 years ago. But afternoon in the park is by far my favorite song from you, Good Luck my friend” pretty sweet thanks tgd521 very appreciated.
out for now
Studio Hibernation
by ILS on Mar.28, 2011, under Blog
It’s been a long time since I’ve posted anything here. In a way that’s good news. It means I’ve been busy.
Been hibernating in the studio of sorts. The studio gigs picked up last Summer and have not stopped. Even had to pass up a few.
Produced a really cool Progressive Metal Demo for Non Human Era, some good friends of mine. Got me back into metal for a little while. Great Guys & Good times. They’re looking for a Singer BTW
Then by the end of the summer I started tracking Wlove. A really cool Montreal Funk Rock outfit. This has been one awesome adventure so far. From tracking drums, bass, guitars, keys and vocals all live of the ground in the studio. Then some guitar & keyboard overdubbing. Now we’re at the final stages of vocal tracking. This thing is a monster album. Way bigger & meaner than we all originally thought, while stay true to their funk roots. but it’s so much more thank just funk, let me tell you. Check em out live
In Dec at the last minute, I was asked to compose some music for the FAE (local teachers federation) TV commercial about students with difficulty learning in schools. This was a cool project. A little last minute. but aren’t they always?
Here is 1 of the 3 commercials
In January I started tracking another album for Idiomatic. a super trippy Radiohead meets Silversun Pickups type of band. Session have been reserved to week-ends only but has gone extremely well. That’s what good preparation does. They listened to my instructions well. We met 3 months prior to the start date we set for the sessions. They rehearsed and rehearsed. All instruments have been recorded including vocals, and we had time left over for some studio experimentation. Always a healthy thing.

And of course I haven’t been keeping a good journal of the events. I’m really trying hard to get that side of things together. I’ll post some stuff as we near the end of the processes. That with a full time job, & an awesome family. Working on all these really amazing projects, musicians, all in such a cool and chill vibe, I feel blessed. What can I say life is good!
that’s it for now
